Description |
Upper left corner, card front: artist's rendering of Lady Liberty seated near the American flag, peering into the face of an American eagle. A scroll at her side reads "Greetings from picturesque America." The other image on the front is a view of The Arcade, commonly referred to as the Old Arcade. In handwriting: "Dec. 31, 1900. Best wishes for a happy century. From your cousin Hugh." The card verso bears a cancellation of Dec. 31, 1900." Although it is common to regard a new century as starting on the first day of a year divisible by 1,000, it is more accurate to designate one as beginning on January 1 of the following year, or in this case, Jan. 1, 1901. |
