"More than 100 West Tech High horticulture students put on their own flower show yesterday. "Green thumb" students included Mary Ann Melda and Jim Hlavaty (front couple) and Roy Kreuzer and Beverly Miller. West Tech Blossoms Out by Rusty Brown. Blossoms of hundreds of spring plants transformed West Tech High's greenhouse into a pageant of color yesterday. The occasion was the 29th annual flower show put on by horticulture students. Now a well-known and popular yearly event, the show drew more than 2000 loyal parents and neighborhood visitors. Horticulture students competed for prizes with nearly 500 spring plants. Bulbs were planted last October and students have nursed them like favorite pets ever since. To make certain all would be in bloom for yesterday's event, greenhouse temperatures were occasionally forced as high as 90 degrees. For many of the students Albert T. Hagg's horticulture course opens the way to a career. Show chairman, Senior Jim Hlavaty, a greenhouse student for three years, hopes to own his own florist shop someday. Likewise aiming for this career is Mary Ann Melda, who entered daffodils, tulips and azaleas in the show. Beverly Miller will make her own East parade corsage from her plants raised for the show. She hopes to become a corsage designer. As well as displaying plants, students showed their talent with floral arrangements and table centerpieces."-- photo verso.
