Description |
"The home of James A. Garfield, Mentor... (Courtesy Western Reserve Historical Society)... Just as Ohio-born Rutherford B. Hayes followed Ohio-born Ulysses S. Grant, as President, so James A. Garfield followed Hayes to become twentieth President of the United States and fourth from Ohio. Born in a long cabin in Cuyahoga County, Garfield attended Hiram College and late Williams College (Mass.). He returned to Hiram to teach Greek and Latin; and a few years later to become its president. As president he has to recruit students and this widened his acquaintanceship: as a result he was elected to the State Legislature. It wasn't long till Governor Dennison asked him to recruit a regiment, in answer to President Lincoln's call to arms, and Garfield marched the Hiram student body off to the front. While Garfield was in the army he was elected United States Congressman from Ohio. He was re-elected eight times. 'His nomination for the presidency at the Republican convention came in a strange way. He was sent as a delegate to present the name of Jahn Sherman but he made such an impressive speech that the convention liked the orator better than his candidate, and Garfield was nominated.' Garfield started his term as President in a storm. He selected a cabinet of men qualified for their jobs without regard for political considerations. As a result disappointed politicians stormed into Washington, threatening impeachment, but "Big Jim" Garfield simply shut the While House doors in their faces. That move cost him his life. He took office March 4, 1881, and was shot July 27th by one of the embittered office seekers. Across the entire facade of Lawnfield is a wide, open, and inviting front porch, which is justly famed as the site of probably the first, and certainly one of the most successful, 'front porch campaigns' for the Presidency. The President's stuy and some of the other rooms are just as left by him when last there." --article from photo verso. |
