Cleveland Jetport (Lake Erie International Jetport) Jetport project Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Airports |
Description |
"Cleveland's jetport of the future with 12,000 -foot runways could be built in the lake along the north side of the breakwater. A tunnel beneath the shipping channel or a bridge would carry passengers and vehicles to its giant supersonic jets. Cleveland could solve its airport expansion problems and become one of few cities in the world with a two-mile runway in its downtown area. The Federal Government might even pay for the entire land-creating project. Several officials at City Hall who assist in airport planning favor the idea. It beats tearing down expensive homes and buildings around Hopkins Airport to lengthen runways, as the Buckley report will recommend when delivered to City Hall Monday. It solves many problems involving noise, safety, and low-flying planes. Air approached would be entirely over the lake. Distance out would nullify noise in the downtown area. Construction methods would be quite like those used to build Burke Lakefront Airport. A bulkhead would be build around the perimeter. Dredgings [sic] from the river would be put inside the bulkhead. When this fill rose about water city refuse could be dumped on it. Hard fill material from demolished obsolete buildings also would give it foundation. It would take years to build such an ideal location for the installation is worth the effort, some planners believe. The Army Corps of Engineers is trying now to get approval of Congress to use this area of the lake front an experimental dumping ground. Dredgings [sic] from the river and harbor would be dumped there. Funds for building the bulkhead wall to hold the fill also are sought by the Army. A close estimate of this cost is $1000 per foot. Surrounding the area would run to $13,000,000 at this rate, an expert estimated. It would be 12,500 feet long, 3,000 feet wide. Time required to build a super airport was estimated at 10 years. --photo verso. |
