Description |
"New York: -- It would almost seem as if a wholesome smile is part of the uniform after a look at these photos of various phases of Girl Scouting in the U.S. On Land, sea and in the air, more than two and a quarter million Girl Scouts are getting ready to observe Girl Scout Week, March 6-12. Top left picture shows a Brownie. The youngest of the Girl Scouts, the Brownies range in age from 7 to 9. They wear light brown uniforms and dark brown caps. An elfin figure decorates the hat. Top right shows an intermediate Girl Scout (ages from 10 to 13) giving the scout salute. They wear the traditional green Girl Scout uniforms with bright yellow ties. They take on projects in arts, crafts, community service, home-making and the out-of-doors. Lower left photo shows a wing scout, an air-minded lass who takes pre-flight training and dreams of the day she will 'solo.' They range in age from 14 through 17. At lower right is a sea-going Girl Scout, called a Mariner Scout. The Mariner Scouts, also in the 14-17 age group, wear bright blue sailor uniforms. In sailboats, motorboats and canoes, they learn to navigate on bays, rivers and lakes. Some 21,000 teen-age girls have become mariners in the last four years. The Mariner Scout program began in 1934. All Girl Scouts are proud of the 43 years of girl scouting in the U.S., no matter what category they are in. CREDIT (UNITED PRESS PHOTO)" -- photo verso. |
