Description |
As a player and a broadcaster, Herb Score was an important part of Cleveland Indians baseball for several generations of Tribe fans. Arguably the best left-handed pitcher ever to wear an Indians uniform, most baseball experts agree that had his career not been cut short due to a dramatic on-field injury, Score would today be regarded as one of the best pitchers of all time . Score began pitching for the Indians in 1955. His record of 16 wins and 10 losses qualified him to be named the American League rookie of the year. Score pitched even better in 1956, going 20-9. Score made the All-Star team and led the league in strikeouts in each of his first two seasons. In a game against the New York Yankees in 1957, Score was hit in the face by a line drive from the bat of Gil MacDougald, breaking his nose and facial bones. He recovered from his injuries and pitched with the Indians in 1958 and 1959, but he never fully regained the form he displayed in his first two years. He finished his playing career with the Chicago White Sox from 1960 to 1962 . In 1964 Score began broadcasting Indians games on television. In 1968, he moved to the radio booth. In 1997, he announced that he would retire at the end of the season. The Indians made it to the seventh game of the World Series that year before losing to the Florida Marlins, making Score's last game as a broadcaster a disappointing one. |
