Description |
"NEWARK, O., Jan. 5--Historic old Moscow bridge declared to be the last of its kind on the national highway (U.S. Route 40) is going the way of the buffalo, and will be replaced by a modern structure. This old landmark was erected over a century ago, when national highway (called the Old Trails road at the time) was little more than an Indian trail. It is of the suspension-saddle type. It would be impossible to say how many of the hardy pioneers passed over this bridge on their way to invade the then "wild West." But it is safe to say that between here and Baltimore, Md., the beginning of the road, thousands of the old freighters and prairie schooners have hit the trail to pass thru this 100-year-old relic to seek their fortune in the West. In the early 50s, Henry Clay passed over this structure, stopping over night at the Diamond Inn, at Hebron, then a thriving holstery. An attempt was made to interest Henry Ford in the purchase of the bridge to be installed in the "relic city" that he is constructing. But after several weeks' correspondence, it was decided that a single track bridge was more suited to his requirements"--Press State Service newspaper article. |
