| Description | The Honam-Hotchkiss house, a stone house, was built in 1838 by John Honam, a Scots weaver, Honam owned property between Belle Ave. and Warren Rd., north of Detroit Ave. to the lake. The house was built of Berea sandstone from a quarry on Cook Ave. and originally stood in what would be the middle of St. Charles Ave. It was used as a residence until 1870 and afterwards as a post office, shoe repair shop, grocery, doctor's office, barbershop, and upholsterer's. In 1902 it was moved to behind the building at 14700 Detroit Ave. The image, taken from Detroit Ave. shortly after the 1902 move, shows the house with two chimneys and a front porch, a store on Detroit, and the new street on the east. |
