DescriptionA clipping from the Plain Dealer dated Sunday, September 18, 1966 from the Benjamin Franklin garden house archives is titled, "First Children's Garden Fair Winners to Receive Vail Prize" describes the first fair sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Garden Center and the Cleveland Public Schools garden program. The official awards program will be held on October 24, 1966 at Higbee's auditorium. Thomas "Vail is publisher and editor of the Plain Dealer. His wife [Iris Vail] is program chairman of the [garden] center. The children's fair was her idea."--from the article. There are two photos with captions. The first caption reads:
"Ribbon Snippers--Gathered around the scissors that opened the Children's Garden Fair are, left to right, first row, pupils Michael Foremen and Geraldine Powers of Wade Park School and Robin Daus of Onoway School; second row, Kathy Seich, Harvey Rice School; Mark Malonek, Henry W. Longfellow School; Mrs. Thomas Vail, Schools Supt. Paul W. Briggs and Gov. James A. Rhodes; back Mayor Ralph S. Locher and Mrs. William H. Evans, chairman of school gardens for the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland."
The second photo caption, that describes two photos to the right reads:
"Funny Fair Finds -- Michael Riley, left, and Cathy Moltz came to the Children's Garden Fair yesterday and found these two prize-winners: a rabbit made from onions, peppers and pea pods and a hat made of real flowers."
