| Description | "Green Thumbs are sought for the Great Gardening Contest" is the title of this Press article announcing the competition for the best tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and for the biggest sunflower. The most popular home garden crop is tomatoes so the committee decided to have five tomato categories: "cherry, yellow, red, beefsteak and biggest." "In the sunflower category, judges will be looking for the tallest plant and the blossom with the largest circumference. In a 1959 Press sunflower contest, honors went to a 14-foot, one inch tall plant and a 17-5/8 inch blossom." "Judging will take place at 3 p. m. Saturday, Aug. 29 at The Press. Judges will be Press garden columnist Ed Rahel and Nick Stephin and Charles Behnke of the Cuyahoga County." -- selections from the article. |
