TitleDetroit-Superior Bridge from the west
CreatorTomsic, Tony
Description"Detroit-Superior Bridge auto traffic in old subway?"--photo verso. Shows the south side of the bridge from the Flats. The city of Cleveland, Ohio considered converting the lower-level of the bridge, originally used for streetcars, into more vehicular lanes to ease congestion on the bridge. This never came to fruition. The opening of the Innerbelt Bridge in 1959 relieved some congestion, but the Detroit-Superior Bridge remained a rush-hour bottleneck. A 2-year renovation, completed in May 1969 at a cost of $6 million, included adding 2 additional traffic lanes by narrowing existing sidewalks from 15 to 5 ft. and cantilevering the new lanes outside the central arch.
